Arctic Summer School takes place at NEFU

On July 29, the Arctic Summer School, a joint educational project of the university, the Northern Forum and Korea Maritime Institute, started at North-Eastern Federal University. Within three weeks, participants from Russia, South Korea, Germany and other countries will attend lectures of leading scientists and experts on the development of the Arctic.

At lectures, participants will learn about the development of the Arctic transport structure, the Northern Sea Route (NSR), aspects of the geography, ecology, history and culture of the small peoples of the North, said Vladlen Kugunurov, NEFU Vice Rector for International Cooperation. “Besides lectures, students will visit Lena Pillars, following the route from the village Tit-Ary to the village Chkalov, and will also visit the “Spasskaya Pad” forest scientific station and the Friendship Museum in Sottintsy,” said the vice rector.

“The school is held in cooperation with the Northern Forum and Korea Maritime Institute, an active member of the University of the Arctic and the organizer of the Arctic Academies, in which our students and master's students take an active part. Also the recently created Ministry for the Development of the Arctic and the Affairs of the Peoples of the North in the republic involved in the work. All students are enrolled in master’s, postgraduate and doctoral studies, interested in the Arctic and, I think, they will become our good partners in this field in the future,” added the vice rector.

According to the associate professor of the Department of International Studies at NEFU Institute of Foreign Philology and Regional Studies, director of the Northern Forum, Daryana Maksimova, the Arctic Summer School is a continuation of previous summer schools represented at the federal university. “Now we are developing an educational unit for the study of the Arctic as a separate direction. All lectures are in English, which emphasizes the international level of the school,” said Daryana Maksimova.
