North-Eastern Federal University ranked 38-42 among Russian universities and sixth among federal universities in the fourth ranking of inventive university activity nationwide, conducted by the Analytical Center "Expert", according to NEFU Department of Strategic Development.

According to the department, a total of 89 Russian universities with the highest rates of inventive activity are included in the ranking, among them all 10 federal universities. “The inventive activity of universities was evaluated by three blocks and ten indicators. NEFU took the 34-36 place in the country and fifth place among federal universities in the “Demand” block, “Number of technologies patented abroad” - 15-17 place in the country, “Number of foreign patents” - 21 -22 place. High positions in these indicators characterize the success of the university in promoting its development in foreign markets. The indicator “Patents in collaboration with companies”, according to which NEFU takes 41-45 place in the country, reflects the activity of the university’s interaction with companies, its applied significance and the demand for developments. The university ranked 17-19 in the “Number of licenses” indicator,” Informed DSD.

The university ranks 46th nationwide and fifth among federal universities in the “Quality” indicator block. “The university shows the strongest positions in the block “Share of patents developed in collaboration with universities and academies” (16th place in the country) and “Share of quoted patents” (18th place in the country). It is the cooperation of the university with the leading scientific centers of the country and the world is a key factor in the distribution of effective solutions. The third block of the ranking is the “Basic Conditions”, NEFU took the 65th place in the country and 7th place among federal universities. This block includes quantitative indicators, such as "The total number of patents registered over 5 years" and "The number of citations made by patents on university articles," said the department’s staff.

According to the experts of the Analytical Center, the “Basic Conditions” block is the least informative. “The most common gross indicators are included here, the weight in the ranking block is 20%. More valuable blocks are the “Demand” and “Quality” of patents, that have to show which university patents are not “empty,” they said.

Director of NEFU Center for Intellectual Property Afanasy Vinokurov commented: “It should be noted that this is the 2019 ranking, but according to the 2018 results. At the end of last year, NEFU adopted targets for the performance of intellectual activity, which increase in both the filing of applications and the received security and legal documents. Of course, this can be achieved with an increase in the level of scientific research of our scientists, when the results of scientific work will be presented by patentable developments in demand on the market.”
