Evgenia Mikhailova: NEFU entered the impact ranking on the sustainable social and economic development of humanity

North-Eastern Federal University entered the new ranking of universities THE University Impact Rankings 2019 of the authoritative global British edition THE (Times Higher Education) in terms of its impact on the sustainable social and economic development of humanity.

In 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration “Transformation of our world: The Sustainable Development Agenda until 2030”. After approval to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the heads of states and governments committed themselves to “save humanity from poverty and “heal” the planet.”

The contribution of universities to achievement of sustainable development was evaluated on 11 of the 17 accepted goals for sustainable human development: good health and well-being (SDG 3); quality education (SDG 4); gender equality (SDG 5); decent work and economic growth (SDG 8); industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9); reducing inequality (SDG 10); sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11); responsible consumption and production (SDG 12); climate action (SDG 13); peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16); partnership to achieve goals (SDG 17).

For the first edition of the ranking, experts assessed more than 450 universities in the world on 11 of the 17 UN global sustainable development goals, including ensuring a healthy lifestyle, quality education, economic growth, poverty eradication and access to justice, etc.

30 universities from Russia, 41 universities from Japan, 31 universities from the USA, and others were selected for the composite ranking. New Auckland University ranked first in the composite ranking, followed by Canadian McMaster and British Columbia, and the British - Manchester University and King's College London. The ranking also includes universities with which NEFU has good partner contacts, for example, South Korean Songjungwan University ranked 30th in the world, University of Kiel (United Kingdom) - 57, and Hokkaido University (Japan) - 101-200 place.

Altai State University is leading among domestic universities - it took the 58th place in the global list. Also, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic (85th place) entered the top 100.

The second hundred included only 4 Russian universities, including M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (101-200 place).

North-Eastern Federal University entered the third hundred (201–300), along with such world-famous leading universities as MISIS, St. Petersburg State University, LETI, Kazan Federal University, Samara University, Tomsk Polytechnic University.

Further, the fourth hundred of universities, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Russian State Social University and Lobachevsky University of Nizhny Novgorod entered the category of 300+.

NEFU showed the best results on the 8th and 10th goals, taking 101-200 place in the world, as well as on the 3rd and 17th goals - 201-300 place worldwide. The number of points scored by our university coincides with such universally recognized patriarchs of higher education and science as Lomonosov Moscow State University, for example, for achievements of the university in the field of ensuring good health and well-being of the population. According to the results of activities in ensuring decent work and the impact on the economic territory growth, NEFU entered the top ten universities in Russia and worldwide and took a worthy place in the 101-200 group of universities in different countries.
