A meeting with Professor Piers Vitebsky was held at NEFU

On October 1, Evgenia Mikhailova, the Interim Rector of North-Eastern Federal University, met with Piers Vitebsky, Professor at the University of Cambridge, who arrived in Yakutia to conduct a scientific expedition in Bulunsky District.

Anatoly Alekseyev, research professor at NEFU Faculty of History, noted that the expedition of Mr. Vitebsky will take place in the Khara-Ulakhsky national nasleg of Bulunsky district. The professor plans to conduct several interviews with reindeer herders, raw-hide tent workers, local residents, to study reindeer herds.

“We will study the nasleg. This area is also interesting to me because the Northern Sea Route is developing and will develop. And I want to study reindeer breeding”, said Piers Vitebsky.

In addition, the Faculty of History plans to continue cooperation with Mr. Vitebsky, establishing a center for the study of the Arctic and the North of the Russian Federation. “It is important for us that the center will be focused on anthropological research, which does not exist in the Northeast and Far East, only in Vladivostok. I think that the establishment of an international center under the chairmanship of Professor Vitebsky for the development of basic studies”, said Natalia Struchkova, Dean of the Faculty of History.

Evgenia Mikhailova noted the importance of research by university staff.
