Ministry of Education and Science of Russia: foreign students allowed to work while studying at the university

On August 5, a federal law came into force, allowing foreign students to work in Russian professional educational organizations and educational institutions of higher education, according to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

According to Vladlen Kugunurov, NEFU Vice Rector for International Cooperation, the adopted law was long-awaited for all universities due to the implementation of the tasks of internationalization and export of Russian education. This law gives a competitive advantage for Russian education in recruiting foreign students. "Countries that are exporting education also create similar favorable conditions for temporary employment and further employment of their best graduates." The law was discussed within the frameworks of the federal project "Export of Education", and of course, it is needed for financial support of foreign students, and will also facilitate the process of temporary employment of students during the period of practical training in industrial companies", said Vladlen Kugunurov.

Employers will be able to hire, without a work permit or patent, foreign students who study full-time in colleges and universities on the main professional educational program that has state accreditation. Students can work in their free time, not only in the region where they study, but throughout the country.

Foreign students previously had the right to work without a work permit or patent only during vacations in their educational organizations or in business organizations, established by educational organizations where they study.

Now, in order to get a job, foreign students only need to provide a certificate confirming that they are studying in Russia. In this case, the employer is no longer required to obtain a work permit for foreign workers. The contract must be terminated after graduation.
