North-Eastern Federal University together with the British University of Durham conducts an international workshop "People on permafrost landscapes" within the frameworks of the “ICELAW” project. The event will be held from 18 to 19 June in village Churapcha.

According to Ulyana Vinokurova, the workshop coordinator-moderator, professor of NEFU Institute of Finances and Economics, the seminar program was developed together with the specialists of the international project “ICELAW” and is being held in Yakutia for the first time.

“The program is aimed at combining the knowledge and creative energy of specialists from various earth sciences and man, as well as representatives of local communities to discuss issues of protection and finding approaches to solve the problems of the permafrost landscapes degradation in places of human activity. It is important to study the historical and natural relationships of the development of permafrost landscapes, assess the risks and possibilities of the anthropogenic organization of the cryo-ecosystems of the North, the hydrological and construction problems of human settlements during global climate change,” said the scientist.

Within the frameworks of the workshop, optimal regulatory regimes for permafrost landscapes, water flows of lakes, rivers, ecosystem degradation will be developed, including new methods for recultivation of disturbed lands.

“It is important to study the ecological culture for population in the context of global changes in permafrost relief. It is necessary to train Yakuts in environmental protection volunteering to restore disturbed lands, rescue from flooding, cleanliness of rivers and lakes and protect frozen landscapes based on international practice. That’s why we organized a workshop,” said Ulyana Vinokurova.
