North-Eastern Federal University has become the winner of the All-Russian Draughts Competition among students. Competitions were held from 8 to 11 February in Yaroslavl.

According to Nikolay Germogenov, the administrator of NEFU Center for Mind Sports and Games, international grandmaster, coach, 24 sportsmen from 9 higher educational institutions of Russia took part in the sports event. “These competitions are held annually. Our students have been showing high results for the past 3-4 years. This year it was quite difficult: name draught players, masters of sports took part, but we were again the best in the team event”, said Nikolay Germogenov. The major focus in the preparation for the competition was put on the women's team. One of the participants of the team was a first-year student of ISPE Ksenia Nakhova, who was awarded the title of grandmaster at the age of 16. In the individual championship, the Yakut athletes Uygulana Varlamova and Irina Ptitsyna took the second and third places. Last year, Uygulana Varlamova became a master of sports, noted at NEFU Center for Mind Sports and Games.

The men's team in the individual championship could not get into the top three winners. “There was a lot of competition among men's teams. Our guys did not have enough luck and skill to win. We understood what we have to do, so we hope to improve our performance by the next competition. I would like to take part in competitions not only among students, but also adults. According to the results of the championship, I will say that our students perform well, I would like to further develop the draughts in our university. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to NEFU Interim Rector Evgenia Isaevna Mikhailova. I believe that success in this prestigious event depended on her support”, said Nikolay Germogenov. According to the results of the competition in the team event, Siberian Federal University took silver. Bronze - N.I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University. University teams were awarded cups and diplomas. Winners and prize-winners of competitions in the individual competition were awarded medals and diplomas.

Let us remember that there are 27 sports sections in 20 sports, including draughts, GO-draughts and chess at NEFU. In total, the university opened seven gyms. “About 17 students are professionally engaged in draughts. Classes are taught by Nikolay Nikanorov. All the guys play at level 1 and 2, there are candidates for the master of sports”, Nikolay Germogenov concluded.
