Professor Tero Mustonen: “The Arctic is not just ice and water, it is - the birthplace of many regional cultures"

Preservation of the population depends on the nation itself. Such opinion was expressed by Tero Mustonen, PhD, president of the organization "Snowchange" (Finland) on November 26 during the international scientific and practical conference "The Arctic: the Prospects for Sustainable Development."

"People are leaving their villages to get an education or a job. But, unfortunately, the man stays where it is easier to adjust. If we together with the indigenous people will encourage the authorities to solve their problems faster until they are completely absorbed by globalization, then we will be able to save their lives - he said in his speech. - The traditional way of life of the population of the North is a very weak ecosystem. They need preservation of natural environment for the continuation of their life. Many people think that the Arctic is only ice and water, but for many regional cultures it is their homeland”.

In his opinion, the science and power must understand that they have a very strong binding to the place in which they live. Also, the scientist noted another trend: the indigenous people of the Arctic, such as the Chukchi want to use progress - mobile phones, internet, computer and other. It shows the beginning of communication of traditions and technologies.

The conference finished on November 28. The event was held to raise the scientific and expert community, the application of advanced scientific technologies to ensure the quality of new development in the northern and Arctic regions.
